In German language, a Wirtsgarten is a waitress serviced outdoors restaurant, usually below trees. Unline a real Munich beer garden, a Wirtsgarten does not include a self-serviced area or has any tables or benches allocated for guests bringing their own picnic.

There are countless Wirtsgarten's in and around Munich which advertise themselves as Biergarten's. Wirtsgarten's masquerading as beer gardens are also found in numerous city guides and in local and international media featuring the Munich lifestyle. Some local newspapers run regular competitions and have even awarded Wirtsgarten's the best beer garden price of the year to entrants which are not real beer gardens. This inevitably confuses visitors who are coming to Munich to experience a real Munich beer gardens, often ending up in what is in fact a typical Wirtsgarten.
