Viktualienmarkt
Since 1970 the Viktualienmarkt beer garden is located at Munich's central fruit market. This city beer garden attracts a mixed crowd including many tourists since the Glockenspiel at Marienplatz is just around the corner.
The beer garden has about 1100 seats shaded by large chestnut trees. Due to the fact that the beer garden is part of the Viktualienmarkt, there is no gravel ground as in every other traditional beer garden. Instead the beer benches stand on cobblestone. Viktualienmarkt beer garden is always busy, especially on sunny days throughout the lunch time. In those hours business men sit next to tourists as well as locals taking a break from their shopping or sightseeing tour. Most of the guests bring food bought at the surrounding food stores and various fast food chains to the beer garden, creating a useful symbiose between food shops and beer garden.
A special feature of this beer garden is that several different beer types are served during alternating periods. An approximately six-week rotating schedule allows for different Bavarian breweries to supply their beer in turns.
The beer garden is open from 9am to 10pm Mondays to Saturdays during the summer and from 9am to 6pm during the winter when the weather is good. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.
