Kloster Andechs Biergarten
The Kloster Andechs Beer Garden is located within the Andechs monastery about 40km south west of the centre of Munich. This small and sometimes crowded beer garden is usually combined with visiting the famous Kloster Andechs, which is historically known for its beer brewing monks.
The beer garden is partly shaded by sun-umbrellas and chestnut trees. A mix of locals, tourist, school classes and other visitors often arrive in groups which can make this a very lively and mixed crowd beer garden.
It is unsual to see anyony bring their own food, perhaps due to the many tourists who do not come from Bavaria and who are not necessarily aware of the custom. The Andech beer garden is however well in tune with Bavarian traditions so to bring one's own food is not discouraged in anyway. The self service food stall offers a selection of typical Bavarian cold and hot meals, and of course, the Andechs beer which is brewed at location and served freshly from the tap. A fish stall offers Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick) prepared with great pride and passion by a dedicated cook using freshly cought traut from the Beeringsee alpine lake topped with organically grown herbs from a spice garden within Andechs. At a price of €20 (approximately twice that of other beer gardens) this is no ordinary Steckerlfisch and there's no shortage of Steckerlfisch orders! Other menu items including beer are normally priced. There is no serviced area at this beer garden. A serviced and more formal Wirtsgarten also part of the Andech property can be found across the road.
The beer garden is open on weekdays when the weather is good from 10am until 6pm and on weekends until 8pm. The seasonal opening period depends on the weather but usually lasts from easter until end October or early November.
